5 Best Freedom Camping Spots in the North Island

Freedom camping is one of the best parts of travelling around the country in a Mojo campervan. There is nothing better than spending the night in nature - and some of the most magical camping spots in the country are free.

When you go freedom camping, you get to relax and enjoy the best of what nature has to offer in total, well, freedom. You get to save money and disconnect from your usual routine. Plus, most camp spots are far away from light pollution, so you can sleep under the stars.

So, without further ado, let us tell you about our favourite freedom camping spots in the North Island.

1. Woolleys Bay Car Park - Northland

Woolleys Bay Beach

Relax at the peaceful campsite at Woolleys Bay Car Park

Just a breath away from golden-sanded Woolleys Bay Beach in Matapouri, this sweet campground allows campers to park up on the grass next to the carpark. Being right next to the clear waters and gorgeous coast of Woolleys Bay in your Mojo Sleepervan is a truly awesome experience. This spot is super close to Matapouri Beach and Whale Bay - both beaches are not to be missed.

If you aren’t used to falling asleep beside the beach, you’re in for a treat. The soft sound of the waves crashing against the shore will lull you into the best sleep of your life.

There is a clean toilet just a two-minute walk away. Our adventurers at Mojo especially love this spot for how quiet, peaceful, and safe it is. But get in quick! There are only a few spots available for camping; we recommend arriving early, so you have plenty of time to set up and enjoy an afternoon swim.

2. Island View Reserve - Whangamatā

This fabulous camp spot is situated on the less busy end of Whangamatā Beach, ideal for anyone who is searching for a quiet and peaceful spot to spend the night. One of the most stunning beaches on the North Island, you will treasure your time here.

We recommend kayaking out to Whenuakura, also known as Donut Island. With the camp spot right beside the kayak launch point, what better way to get immersed in the full experience of this amazing location?

Island View Reserve is safe for travellers, and its toilets are clean. Only certified self-contained vehicles are allowed there (lucky all our Mojo Campervans fit the bill). This is a place that gets packed quickly, so for your best chance at getting in, try going early in the peak season.

3. Castlepoint Carpark - Wairarapa

Don’t skip this spectacular camping spot situated along the Wairarapa coastline! With gorgeous views of the 162 metre high Castlepoint lighthouse and surroundings, there are plenty of things to explore when you park your campervan here.

There are multiple walks in the area that suit a range of fitness levels. We love the Deliverance Cove Track, a cruisy path that rewards you with spectacular views. And while the beach is not safe for swimming, that is more than compensated for by the chance to see dolphins, whales, and fur seals visiting the area.

Castlepoint Carpark in low season - it can get very busy here in high season

Castlepoint Carpark gets busy in the high season, so make sure you nab one of the limited parks early in the day and take advantage of that extra time to look around the limestone reef!

4. North Egmont Carpark - Taranaki

Stunnings views of Mount Taranaki from North Egmont Carpark

At the base of Egmont National Park, this freedom camping spot is an ideal place to get close to nature. From your van, you’ll get amazing views of Mount Taranaki. When you step outside, you’ll be faced with several fantastic walks, including overnight hut hikes through the park.

If you’re feeling cultured, this camp spot is only a 30-minute drive from the quirky town of New Plymouth, the home of the world-famous Len Lye Centre - home to some fantastic works by a groundbreaking Kiwi artist!

The campsite is equipped with a clean and tidy toilet block. Plus, it’s right next door to a cafe - so you can get a coffee and cooked breakfast in the morning. Luxury!

5. Tokerau Beach - Northland

Almost at the very top of the North Island is where you will find this beautiful beachside campsite. This is one of the most incredible places to go freedom camping, with stunning views of Tokerau Beach. You’ll be on the cusp of Karikari Peninsula and a short drive from the famous Rotopokaka, also known as Coca Cola Lake.

With stunning natural landscapes all around you, you’ll be smitten with this campsite. You also might get the chance to learn a bit about the rich history of the Northland people, dating back hundreds of years.

The toilet block is an easy 5-minute walk away. Getting to the campsite requires driving along a gravel road, so make sure your vehicle can go on unsealed roads and that you’re comfortable driving on them.
