How to Keep Your Campervan Organised During Your Road Trip

You don’t need us to tell you that campervans have far more limited space than homes do. Leaving things lying around in your campervan while you’re travelling risks damaging them. At the very least, the mess is inconvenient to move around and can cause irritating noise and rattling while you’re driving.

If you’re about to head out on a campervan trip - whether for a few days or a few weeks - having a good system in place for organising your belongings is critical. After all, you want your van trip to be as enjoyable as possible!

How can I keep my campervan tidy?

Here are some of our top tips for keeping your campervan or motorhome from accumulating clutter while you’re on the road.

Pack tight

The tighter you pack your belongings, the less room they have to move around while you’re driving.

Secure your breakables

Wine glasses, plant pots, and crockery won’t last long if you leave them sitting on the bench. Hanging mugs can break easily once they start swinging around, even if they look like a clever space saver.

Before you start driving, make sure you pack your breakables in a cupboard. Alternatively, put them on the bed. To prevent stacked bowls and plates from rattling, you can put a tea towel between them.

Consider the weight of items

It won’t always be possible, but when you can, try to pack heavier items (such as tinned cans) lower and further forward. That will provide you with more balanced weight distribution.

Make things easy for yourself

Pack the items you use the most frequently in more easily accessible places. Rather than stashing your socks and undies on the far side under the bed, put your games, instruments, outdoor shower or spare bedding there instead.

Optimise your space

Using clever organising systems will make your van life so much easier. Organisers that can sit on the back of seats or the inside of cupboards make the most of the space you have, and they give you way more places to put the items you want more access to.

Like with like

Grouping similar items together will make it much easier for you to find everything you need. Designate one place for your pantry items, another spot for your toiletries, and somewhere else for your treats and entertainment.

What do I actually need to take with me?

Minimising the amount of stuff you take with you will simplify your storage solutions. But you’re still going to want to bring plenty of things to keep yourself comfortable and entertained. Here’s a list of some of the essentials you will need to pack - and where to put them:

Documentation

Keeping the following documents on hand in your campervan is essential:

● Driver’s license

Mojo Sleepervan / campervan rental agreement

● Insurance documents

● Emergency contact details

Put all of the above in a handy file in case of an emergency, and store it somewhere safe and easy to get to.

Clothes

Find a balance between having plenty of layers to deal with the New Zealand weather and bringing as little luggage as possible. Make sure you’ve got enough warm clothing for overnight cold snaps, but don’t bring too many double-ups. If you can, pack your clothes in some of the storage spaces available in your van. That makes them far easier to get to when you need to get changed, and it also simplifies keeping your clean and dirty laundry separate. Try to avoid bringing along any hard-shell suitcases.

First aid and toiletries

Keep a first aid kit somewhere easy to get to, like your glove box. Include extra items such as sunblock, insect repellant and any personal medication. For your toiletries, make sure you use eco-friendly soaps and shampoos - especially if you plan to use a camp shower.

Quality bedding

When you’re sleeping in a campervan, it’s better to have a bit too much bedding than a bit too little. You can get good quality woollen blankets for cheap at op shops, which don’t take up too much space and are super cosy. Of course, essentials such as bedding come with all our Mojo Campervans and Mojo Sleepervans.

Food

Pack plenty of food for your journey, especially non-perishables, and stow it away in the storage lockers that come in your van.

Entertainment

Make sure you bring plenty of things to keep you busy on a rainy day and in the evenings. Books, art supplies, and board games are lightweight and easy to store in a van. If you’re a music lover, maybe now’s the time to practice a transportable instrument like the harmonica or the flute! But if you want to bring your guitar, when there’s a will, there’s a way.
