The best local foods and drinks to try
in New Zealand

When you think of New Zealand, you probably imagine stunning landscapes and adrenaline-pumping adventures; but once you’re here, you’ll realise it’s also a paradise for foodies! The country’s unique culinary scene is a blend of fresh, local ingredients and cultural influences, making it a must-visit for anyone who loves to eat and drink. So while you’re road-tripping around the country, here’s some of the best food and drink you’ve got to try.

Pāua

Kick off your New Zealand food adventure with pāua, a type of abalone that's a local favourite. It’s often minced and made into fritters or pies. Imagine tender, flavorful seafood wrapped in a buttery pastry – that’s a pāua pie for you. It’s a unique taste you won’t find anywhere else.

Green-Lipped Mussels

Next up, green-lipped mussels. These massive mussels are famous not just for their size but for their delicious taste and health benefits. Typically steamed with garlic and white wine, they’re a simple but tasty dish you can find in many seafood restaurants, especially around Marlborough in the South Island. Check out our South Island itinerary here.

Hāngī

For a true cultural experience, you’ve got to try a hāngī. This traditional Māori feast involves cooking meat and vegetables in a pit oven with heated rocks, giving the food a distinct smoky flavour. It’s a communal event, so it’s not just about the food but also the atmosphere and the chance to learn about Māori culture. Trying a hāngī can be challenging unless you befriend the locals, but visiting Rotorua makes it easier. There, you can enjoy many cultural performances that often include this traditional Māori feast. Have a look at our North Island itinerary which includes a stop in Rotorua here.

Kaimoana (Seafood)

Given the country’s extensive coastline, the seafood here is phenomenal. Crayfish (small lobsters) in Kaikoura and Bluff oysters are highlights. Bluff oysters are a real treat – they’re plump, creamy, and best enjoyed raw with a bit of lemon. If you’re a seafood lover, New Zealand will feel like paradise!

New Zealand Lamb

You can’t talk about New Zealand food without mentioning lamb. The country is renowned for its tender, flavorful lamb, usually served roasted with local vegetables. Pair it with a glass of New Zealand Pinot Noir, and you’re in for a memorable meal.

Kumara

Kumara, or sweet potato, is a staple here. It’s super versatile and can be found in many dishes. Kumara fries are especially popular – they’re a sweet, savoury, and crunchy alternative to regular fries. Try them, and you might find yourself hooked.

Mince Pies

Mince pies are a quintessential part of New Zealand's comfort food scene. These savoury pies are filled with minced meat, often beef, cooked in a rich, flavorful gravy, and encased in a flaky pastry. Whether you grab one from a local bakery or a roadside gas station, mince pies are a tasty and satisfying snack that Kiwis love. They’re perfect for a quick lunch on the go or a warm treat on a chilly day. If you’re road tripping around the Central Otago area, we recommend stopping the famous Fairlie Bakery who have won numerous awards for their pies!

Jam and Cream Donuts

For those with a sweet tooth, jam and cream donuts are a must-try. These fluffy donuts are filled with sweet jam and fresh cream, creating a delightful combination that’s both indulgent and satisfying. You can find them in most bakeries across New Zealand, and they make for a perfect afternoon treat with a cup of coffee or tea.

Pavlova

When it comes to dessert, pavlova is a must. This meringue-based treat has a crispy exterior and a soft, marshmallowy inside, usually topped with whipped cream and fresh fruit like kiwifruit and strawberries. It’s a favourite during festive occasions like Christmas or summer BBQs, and perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth. Don’t listen to the Aussies, pavlova is a Kiwi classic!

Mānuka Honey

Mānuka honey is another unique New Zealand product. Made from the nectar of the Mānuka tree, it’s known for its rich flavour and health benefits. Whether you spread it on toast, stir it into tea, or just eat it by the spoonful, it’s a delicious and beneficial treat. We recommend stocking up on it here as it’s much cheaper to buy local, than overseas.

L&P (Lemon & Paeroa)

For something refreshing, grab a bottle of L&P. This iconic Kiwi soft drink combines lemon juice with carbonated mineral water from the town of Paeroa. It’s sweet, tangy, and perfect on a hot day. You’ll find it pretty much everywhere, but most commonly at your local dairy (convenience store).

New Zealand Wine

New Zealand’s wine scene is world-class. The Marlborough region is famous for its Sauvignon Blanc, which is crisp and vibrant with hints of tropical fruit. If you prefer reds, Central Otago’s Pinot Noir is rich and earthy. Many vineyards offer tours and tastings, so you can sip and savour right where the magic happens.

Flat White

Coffee lovers, rejoice! The flat white is a Down Under creation you’ll find in every café. It’s similar to a latte but has a higher ratio of coffee to milk and a smoother, velvety texture. Whether you’re starting your day or taking a coffee break, a flat white is a perfect pick-me-up.
